BARBARA M CAMPBELL (CAM) fl.c.1940-1960,
"Slumber-time", illustration pen, ink and
watercolour, 6 1/2 x 10 3/4in Believed to be an illustration for the short story 'Tuppence & Co'
Barbara Mary Campbell who often signed her work 'CAM', grew up in in London and Jersey. She attended Clapham School of Art, St. Martin’s School of Art, and Central School of Arts & Crafts, London. Other than illustrating she turned to the making of models of people from plastic wood for such places as the Imperial Institute of South Kensington, Science Museum, Transport Commission, and she exhibited at the Jamestown Exhibition in 1957. She exhibited at the SWA, NEAC, RA and ROI.
As for 'Tuppence and Co', no sign until we discovered this at Abe Books - unfortunately they are selling it for £3,500 so our plan to offer the book with our one delightful but solitary illustration seems a little out of reach. There is no doubt of the provenance of this picture when you see the others made of the three naughty pekes by Barbara Campbell.
