Quite hard to compute at all, let alone to date precisely but concertina time and imagine some senator, toga clad, with a purple edge of course, pulling this extraordinary little bronze serpent from its folds to excavate the sesame or pomegranate seeds that had stuck in his teeth during an indulgent cena.  Definitely a  pluperfect present for the person with everything else......
