Just imagine – the Hundred Years War, Crécy and Poitiers, the Black Prince, the Order of the Garter, the Black Death and a 50 year reign embodied in this small emblem of the past.  A groat was worth 4 pence – a longbowman’s daily wage at the time of the Battle of Crécy was 3 pence.  This coin was found at Berkeley Castle where Edward II, Edward III’s father, was done to death, according to the stories, by the most uncomfortable means involving red hot pokers.  Today's historians are inclined towards a less colourful end.
