Figures and camels in an outdoor setting, the top with a band of script, framed and glazed, 31.5cm x 25cm. Further script to verso.
We can’t help falling for these little Persian scenes, their story is more often than not a mystery, whether a scene from the Shannameh, from the poetry of Hafez, or any number of folk tales and legends. Meanwhile we fall for the look on the face of a camel, or a man being raised or lowered from a well and out of the picture frame too.
This miniature illustrates a poem by Hafez, the great poet (1325-1390) who spent all his life in Shiraz. Hafez’s poems can be read on two levels – at face value, about the social life of mediaeval Persia as a tribute to his wealthy patron, or in a cryptic way about Sufi mystical theology. Above all, Hafez’s poetry is characterised by his love of humanity, sympathy for the problems of ordinary people, contempt for hypocrisy, and his search for ultimate reality.
