From the description of the book Poles Apart by Ingrid Taylor which is a well-researched biography (now out of print) of Antoni Sulek :

“Antoni was born in Morpeth in 1951 to Polish parents, who came to England from a country torn apart by the Second World War. His work and his life was greatly influenced by his parents struggle to survive the labour camps of Siberia and their journey to freedom across Russia, Central Asia, Africa and the battle fields of Italy.

He painted passionately and with an obsession which ultimately took over his life.

His work is extremely diverse; from portraiture and landscapes of the Polish and Northumberland countryside, to hard hitting expressionist paintings of Polish suffering and his own inner torment. Antoni’s passion for painting and his unusual lifestyle set him apart from the local community.

His arrest and expulsion from Poland in the 1980s and his self imposed exile from his family had a profound effect upon him.'

Antoni Sulek died tragically young, just short of his 37th birthday in 1951.  His father, Piotr, who outlived him and died only in 2021 aged 101, worked to keep his son's legacy alive but it is only since his death that more of Antoni's paintings have appeared and collectors have begun to re-evaluated his great and unusual talent.
