Watercolour, 30.5 x25.4cm, framed and glazed, Eglise St Roch inscribed on mount.
We do enjoy a good soaring interior and this glorious little watercolour adds an atmospheric grandeur and lightness to the interior of this well-known Parisian church that is less obvious in the present day.
John Scarlett Davis was born in Leominster and died of TB in London. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools and was a landscape, portrait and architectural painter, particularly well known for his delightful interior paintings of art galleries and churches, including interiors of the Vatican and the Escurial Palace as well as the Uffizzi gallery and the Louvre. The church of St Roche, in the Rue St Honoré, , was built between 1653 and 1740 in the late Baroque style. The Marquis de Sade was married there, and it holds the tombs of a number of notables including the artist, Jean- Honoré Fragonard.
