Edgar Downs ROI, English impressionist, was born at Birkenhead and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a war artist during World War I, serving at Gallipoli and Salonica, and was attached to the 1st County of London Yeomanry in 1918.  One of his paintings hangs in the HQ of the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry. He became most generally known for his paintings of animals and farming.  He exhibited at the RA, and widely throughout England. In later life he lived at Mudeford in Hampshire and 2 of his paintings, including a much larger version of Gathering Kelp, hang in Fordingbridge Town Hall.
