We are not sure what a baron of beef is, but this is the plate for a mediaeval sized cut of meat, a swan, or a huge Christmas turkey.  It is unchipped and uncracked – the marks on the photograph of the back are just wear and tear stains.

We all see second hand blue and white china all the time, until we cease to notice any of the extraordinary patterns that were developed in the 19th century.  The ‘Gothic Castle’ is completely bonkers and worth another look.  It is believed to have been introduced between 1811 and 1814 and is no longer produced.  It must have exhausted the imagination of its designers, a gothic castle, a slightly odd church, an oriental garden with some very Chinese looking hills in the background, and cartouches on the border with everything from pagodas to elephants and giraffes, which few people buying their dinner service would ever have seen. A flight of fancy would suggest its design for a real exotic with a taste for the Gothic like William Beckford.
