Samuel Philips Jackson (British, 1830-1904), well framed and glazed. Labels verso. Image size 22.5 x 20cm. Provenance: previously sold by Sotheby's, 5/5/92, lot 12.  

Samuel Philips Jackson was born Bristol, the son of the landscape painter Samuel Jackson.  He exhibited first in London at the age of 20.  He became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society and was a prolific contributor to their winter and summer exhibitions.  He specialised in landscape and marine paintings and was fascinated by photography, inventing an instantaneous shutter for which he was recognised by the Royal Photographic Society
